Passing of Bro. Fabian/Fr. James Toal, SFP Class of 1950

Please pray for the repose of the soul ofFr. James F. Toal, OFM,(SFP Class of 1950) who passed away on July 24th at the age at 87 in St. Petersburg, FL. He was a professed Franciscan Friar for 44 years and a Priest for 43 years.

Before his ordination as a priest in 1975, Fr. James was a Franciscan Brother known asBrother Fabianand then Brother James.Bro. Fabian taught at Bishop Ford High School and St. Francis Prep. At Prep, he held a number of positions in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. He taught junior and senior English, served as moderator for Baseball, Basketball, Father's Guild, Student Council, Athletic Control Board and served as Principal.
 
After serving as Principal of St. Francis Prep, he was ordained a priest in 1975; a member of Holy Name Province in the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor (OFM).
 
Over the course of his career, he held several leadership positions in higher education, serving as President of Quincy University in Quincy, Ill. for 14 years, and executive vice president at St. Bonaventure University in New York from 1976-83. Fr. Toal retired in 2008 as vice president at Siena College where he served for nearly 40 years.
 
A native New Yorker, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English (with minors in French and History) from St. Francis College, a Master’s in English from St. John’s University, and a Ph.D. in college administration and supervision from Fordham University. He also attended the Weston School of Theology in Boston. In 2014, he was inducted into the St. Francis Prep Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor.
