St. Francis Prep continued a very special activity today as the school held its second annual Walk-a-thon fundraising event. Nearly 3,000 students, faculty members, staff members, parents and alumni participated in what is one of the single largest school "Walk-a-thon" events in the area. Students walked on paths through the nearby scenic Cunningham Park and followed along the many stretches of the well-persevered historic Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. Each student was required to raise at least $100 in sponsorship donations and there were various incentive prizes for both individual students and homerooms (known as CORs) to raise even greater amounts.  Click here to view photo gallery.

"At the end of the day the student body will have raised more than $275,000--with a combined total of well over half a million dollars between this year's event and last year's," said Robert Angeletti, the Prep’s Director of Development. The Prep’s alumni were also very generous and supportive participants. Alumni Director, Brother Robert Kent, was proud to report that members of the Alumni Association raised nearly $25,000 of the total amount reported. He added, "Several alumni also participated in the walk to show their school spirit.”

This positive response from alumni is familiar to the school. "Last fall, with the help of many supportive and generous alumni donors and friends, we dedicated our new Physical Education and Athletic Training Center and our new Art Education Center,” said Prep’s Principal, Brother Leonard Conway. "The proceeds of the Walk-a-thon will benefit our ongoing Capital Improvement and Modernization Program, which is a multi-year plan that includes several projects and phases of activity, with the immediate priority being the construction of a new complex for our Science and Music Departments. We hope to break ground on this next June."

The Music and Science programs at St. Francis Prep have earned the school much deserved recognition from outside agencies for their outstanding achievements.

Prep's Music program earned the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools "Music Credential" during the school's most recent accreditation review. It is one of a select few credentials that the agency bestows upon schools in order to recognize "gold standard" programs. Specifically, the agency stated, "St. Francis Prep is a school where students receive outstanding support and are provided with education and performance programs that are of superior quality."
Prep's Science Research Program is a rigorous, extra-curricular, four-year program designed to engage students in conducting high-level, original research in the natural and social sciences. The quality and caliber of the program is evident. A Prep student was named a semi-finalist in the prestigious Intel Science Competition in 10 consecutive years and in 11 out of 12 years through 2010. St. Francis Prep was the only Catholic high school in the nation to accomplish this. (Several times there have been multiple Intel semi-finalists in the same year!)
We are grateful to everyone for their generous support and participation in this event!  We also wish to thank our key sponsors:
