Prep's Chamber Orchestra on TV this Weekend; Award Winning Ensemble
Friday, April 20, 2007
St. Francis Prep's Chamber Orchestra will be appearing on The Prayer Channel this Saturday, April 21 at 8:20 pm. This performance is part of the Annual Brooklyn Diocese Telethon and was taped in St. James Basilica (near the old Prep) on March 16th.
Since last May, this award winning ensemble has earned a Gold Medal rating with the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and has appeared in a full range of events, including an appearance as Prep's Ballet Orchestra in January, providing musical backdrop for the choreography of Prep's Performing Arts Director, Donna Mejia.
As a result of their participation in NYSSMA, the group's concertmaster, Joseph Ahn '07, as well as percussionist Natasha Berry '07, earned individual honors. Both were selected to perform not only in New York All-State ensembles, but Music Educators National Conference (MENC) All-Eastern Honors ensembles. Natasha is a student of veteran Prep teacher, Mark Teofilo. Natahsa and Joseph are the first two Prep students to participate in All-Eastern.
On March 21st, the Orchestra traveled to Manhattan to participate in a side-by-side rehearsal with the InerSchool Orchestras of New York's Turtle Bay Orchestra. Prep students, emulating the mission of the school, served as mentors for a day for these young musicians, some of whom are just five years old.
The ensemble's next major, public performance is on Friday, May 4th at 8:00 pm for the Spring Concert in the Bro. Ralph Clifford, O.S.F. Memorial Auditorium.
