Today marks the first official day of class for all students as the Prep begins its 152nd year. The Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn founded the Prep in 1858 and they still maintain a very visible presence at the school.
Earlier this week (Tuesday), administrators, faculty and staff attended an opening-of-the-school year Mass, heard presentations from Brother Leonard Conway (now in his 28th year as Principal) and the Assistant Principals, and conducted departmental meetings. On Wednesday and Thursday, students attended presentations and orientation sessions in preparation for today's first full day of class.
Among the items noted by Brother Leonard was the construction work (begun over the summer) that will continue well into the fall and result in the new Coach Vince O'Connor Physical Education and Athletic Training Center AND the new Art Education Center. (This work represents Phase II of the long-term "master plan" for the school.) The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 will help fund this effort and will be "rolled out" in the weeks ahead. The campaign will build upon the $5 million already committed to this effort during the 150th Anniversary celebrations.
