Passing of Sister Ginny Bertschi on September 25

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Ginny Bertschi, who died on Friday, September 25, 2009, at her home in Cresson, PA, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sister Ginny taught Religion and was an Assistant Principal here at St. Francis during the late 1970’s. (See complete details below.)

Sister Virginia Bertschi, R.S.M., 67, member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy, died Friday at home in Cresson. She was born Mary Virginia Bertschi in the Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late Otto and Mary (Joyce) Bertschi.
Surviving are six siblings: Thomas (Barbara) of Bethpage, N.Y., Steven (Ginny) of Southold, N.Y., Robert (Jane) of Babylon, N.Y., Catherine (Dennis) Schneider of Greene, N.Y., Janet (Arthur) Bertschi-Young of South Orange, N.J., and Carol (partner, Gregory Livote) of Bethpage, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews; and her loving Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1959, and professed her religious vows on Aug. 16, 1962. Then known as Sister M. Kevin Joseph, she professed her perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1967.
Sister Ginny was a graduate of Queen of the Rosary Academy, Amityville, N.Y., and Misericordia University, Dallas, Pa. She received an M.A. in catechetical theology from Manhattan College, N.Y., and an advanced diploma in educational administration from St. John's University, N.Y.
During her 50 years as a Sister of Mercy, Sister Ginny served in the Pennsylvania dioceses of Harrisburg, Altoona-Johnstown and Scranton; in the New York dioceses of New York, Brooklyn and Rockville Center; and in the diocese of Toledo, Ohio. She also ministered with the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, and Rosslyn, South Africa.
In addition to her work as a gifted college administrator, Sister Ginny was a teacher and principal for many years. She was principal of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, N.Y., and McAuley High School, Toledo, Ohio.
She was dean of students at St. Catherine Academy, Bronx, N.Y., and a faculty member at St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, N.Y., and Bishop Reilly High School, Flushing, N.Y. Sister had also served as the Assistant Director of Education in the diocese of Altoona-Johnstown and in community leadership as the director of ministry for the Sisters of Mercy, Dallas.
At the time of her death, Sister Ginny was senior vice president for administrative services at Mount Aloysius College, Cresson. She was also a member of the board of trustees of Misericordia University, Dallas, and was the chairwoman of the Sisters of Mercy Healthy Communities Initiative Endowment Fund.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at Mercy Center. She was laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Pa.
