The St. Francis Prep Chamber Orchestra recently participated in a “side-by-side” rehearsal with the (very) young students of the ISO at Turtle Bay Orchestra in Manhattan. “Turtle Bay’s” young musicians participate in the InterSchool Orchestras of New York (ISO), a prominent youth orchestra program. Students begin as young as five years old.
Prep’s Chamber Orchestra and “Turtle Bay” share the same conductor, Robert L. Johnston. There is even a bigger Prep presence, as clarinetist Bill Kalinkos '99, multi-instrumentalist David Kobayashi ’93, and Prep Music faculty member Mark Teofilo serve on Mr. Johnston’s staff. This is the third year in a row that Prep students have mentored their young counterparts---truly a Franciscan effort!
Maestro Johnston will be leading the combined ISO at Turtle Bay and Morningside Orchestras of ISO in a Gala Benefit performance at Lincoln Center’s newly renovated Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday night, June 2nd at 7:30PM. Prep has certainly aided greatly in the success of the evening, given the efforts of its Chamber Orchestra. Contact The InterSchool Orchestras of New York for tickets, (212) 410-0370.
Our Prep Chorus will participate in the Gala 40th Anniversary Concert of the Bergen Youth Orchestras (BYO), which has been providing a training program for serious young musicians who are capable of working in a professional manner in Bergen County, New Jersey since 1968. Prep will provide one of four high school choruses for a performance of Gustav Mahler’s powerhouse “Resurrection” Symphony.
In addition to our students, Prep alumna and current Music faculty member Rosie Pignataro ’03 will be featured as soprano soloist in this magnificent and profound century old work that will feature nearly 400 musicians!
The performance is at the state-of-the-art performance space of the Bergen Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey on Sunday, June 7th at 4PM. Come meet Maestra Pignataro, Mr. Johnston (who serves on the BYO Board of Trustees), and the Prep Chorus!
Tickets Available at door or sold by calling the Bergen Youth Orchestra office: (201) 569-1625.
