The Third Annual Stephen J. Shurina Memorial Golf Outing
Scholarship Fund is a Tribute to a Family’s
Belief in Catholic Education
The late Stephen J.
Shurina and his wife, Patricia, always put the education of their five children
ahead of all else— even throughout very lean financial times. "Our dad was a firefighter whose
injuries forced him into early retirement in the prime of his life” said
Stephen Shurina III, Class of 1984. "Mom was a nurse.”
Despite any money issues that may have arisen, the Shurinas stayed the
course and remained committed to meeting the costs of their children’s education. "He sacrificed all to send each of his five
children to 12 years of Catholic School.” Stephen recalled.
When then elder
Shurina passed away three years ago, family members and neighborhood friends
were mindful of the commitment and love that inspired such great sacrifices. Many recall how during the 20-year
period from 1968 through 1988, the Shurinas always had at least one child enrolled
in a Catholic School. From 1970-86
they paid multiple tuitions, and from 1976-80 all five of their kids were
enrolled in Catholic schools! To ensure that the memory of Shurina’s commitment
to Catholic education wasn’t forgotten, friends and family worked together in
order to establish The Stephen J. Shurina Memorial Scholarship Fund.
"As a parent now I
fully realize what an unbelievable sacrifice that was and appreciate what we
have been able to become as adults due to the sacrifice and the lessons we
learned at St. Sebastian’s and St. Francis Prep.” Stephen Shurina said. He added,
"This is why we started the fund and in our opinion it was a microcosm of what
he stood for. We wanted to give back
just a portion of what we were given.”
Last Thursday, (September
27th), 110 golfers and 30 dinner guests gathered at Clearview Park Golf
Course for the third year in a row to continue their quest of providing a
scholarship opportunity in memory of Stephen J. Shurina. Among the guests this year, former St.
John’s and Chicago Bulls Center and three-time NBA Champion, Bill Wennington.
All told, $28,000 has
been raised over the past three years.
The committee has now awarded two full scholarships to students from St.
Sebastian’s in Woodside who have gone on to study at St. Francis Prep. Prep Junior, Allison Hourigan ’14
was the first recipient, and incoming freshman, Jonathan Ferreira ’16,
was selected as the current recipient of a full scholarship
The Scholarship Fund
Committee favors students from St. Sebastian’s who have been involved in athletics and who have a
desire to attend St. Francis Prep. Nevertheless, the committee looks at
the "whole person” and seeks students with solid grades, who are of good
character and engaged in community service of some kind. They also consider financial need in
addition to other criteria, and this helps the board make sound decisions that
best serves the overall good.
